Art Warsaw Villa Róż | 2026

20/05/2026 - 24/05/2026

We’re happy to share that bliss will be part of this year’s Art Warsaw Villa Róż taking place from May 21–24 in Warsaw. The gallery will present works by Antoni Starczewski (1924 – 2000), one of the key figures of the Polish postwar neo-avant-garde. His artistic practice encompassed sculpture, ceramics, printmaking, textile works, as well as sound-based and performative activities. At the core of his interests were rhythm, notation, and structure – understood as universal principles that could be transposed across different media.

Antoni Starczewski approached language as a physical phenomenon: sound, rhythm, notation, gesture. Letters – much like lines, stripes, or modules – were treated as elementary structural units that could be arranged, repeated, and translated between media.

In his works, writing is stripped of its communicative function and reduced to matter: sign, trace, sequence. Vowels, proofreading marks, crossings-out, and linear arrangements form structures reminiscent of musical scores. Starczewski consistently explored the moment when notation ceases to function as a carrier of meaning and begins to operate instead as a temporal structure – something between image and sound. In this sense, his practice exists between writing and music: language is not used to convey meaning, but rather to reveal repetition, order, pause, and silence.
